PIERRE, S.D. – There was a welcome home ceremony held Wednesday night at Hyde Stadium for the 2017 State American Legion Baseball Champion Pierre Post 8. Pierre ended a 49 year drought by winning the title late last month in Rapid City and then went on to finish 3rd in the Central Plains Region Baseball Tournament in Dickinson, N.D., losing to the two teams that played for the championship. 5 members of the 1968 State Champion Pierre team, the last Pierre squad to win a State Legion Baseball title, were on hand at the celebration. Mike Curry, who now lives in Lousiana, made the longest trip to Pierre for the Welcome Home celebration. Pierre head coach Brian White thanked the Fans and families of the squad as well as the city of Pierre and praised the team as well as giving a special thank you to assistant coach Bill Gayton who will be retiring after a number of years of coaching in the Post 8 system. The team was on hand with the exception of Joe King who had to go to Fargo for football practice with North Dakota State.
