Organizers are hoping a new administration and a new year for the State Legislature will give new life to the horse racing industry in South Dakota.
Fort Pierre Horse Racing track manager Shane Kramme says over the years, money has been taken out of the state’s horse racing coffers, which has created a shortage of funds to put on the races.
If the 2019 Legislature doesn’t come up with money to support horse racing next year, Kramme says there may not be any races or, only racing at one track.
In 2018, races were held four days in Fort Pierre and another four days in Aberdeen. Kramme says horse racing has a long legacy in South Dakota.
Members of the South Dakota Horsemen’s Association will discuss the issue during their annual meeting tomorrow (Sat.) in Fort Pierre.
The public is welcome to attend a Danny Hall & the Joe Creek Band concert tomorrow night starting at 9:30 at the Pat Duffy Community Center. Tickets are $20.
2018 was the 70th year the Verendrye Benevolent Association has hosted horse races in Fort Pierre.
