PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Saturday brings a “Walk for the Fallen” to Pierre. The event has been held in other South Dakota cities like Sioux Falls and Eagle Butte for the past four years, but this will be the first such event for the Capital City. The mile long walks are held to honor and remember all service men and women who have died as the result of war. Organizer Brad Steckelberg of Pierre says the walks are held across the country and since 2008; over 50,000 participants and over 200,000 miles have been walked to remember those who have fallen in recent years in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Walks were held last weekend in Eagle Butte and Sioux Falls. Steckelberg says tomorrow’s event will include the reading of the names of 35 South Dakotans who have perished with Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. Tomorrow’s Walk for the Fallen starts at 10:00 a.m. at the War Memorials along Capitol Lake and will trek the grounds around the capitol building.
