PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Some firefighters remain at the Capitol Inn and Suites in Pierre this morning where a fire broke out late yesterday afternoon. Fire crews have been working to put out small flare-ups at the site this morning. The fire was first reported around 4 p.m. Tuesday and the blaze displaced dozens of tenants. Richard Smith of the Red Cross says 14 people stayed at a shelter at the United Methodist Church overnight.
Smith says at this point, the Red Cross is not asking local citizens for any donations-other than monetary.
Donations can be made through www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS. Smith says if donations of certain items are needed, they will make a public announcement for assistance. Smith says he’s been impressed by how the community has rallied around Capitol Inn residents and area firefighters.
Eight Red Cross volunteers have been working at the shelter so far and Smith says another 12 will join them soon.
Authorities will hold a press conference on the fire this morning at 8:00 a.m.
