The South Dakota Department of Transportation is planning to replace the bridge between Pierre and Fort Pierre in 2020, but the two towns are meeting now to decide what features they’d like the bridge to include.
Mayor Gloria Hanson says the Fort Pierre City Council has come up with a list of features they’d like the bridge to include.
Hanson says both Pierre and Fort Pierre will have the opportunity to make their side of the bridge unique.
Hanson says including those unique aspects to the bridge will cost both towns some money.
The Pierre City Commission will hold a public hearing on the Missouri River Bridge design options at 5:45 during tonight’s (Tues.) commission meeting. Pierre and Fort Pierre will work together on a final bridge package to bring to the state Department of Transportation. The deadline for that is March 1st.
The bridge will remain two lanes east and west but will include a wider, 12 foot walking path with multiple belvederes cut in to allow for seating and resting.
