Pierre Man Arrested After Chase That Followed Report of Burglary at Fort Pierre’s Hop Scotch Bar

FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre man was taken into custody Saturday after law enforcers were dispatched to the report of a burglary at the Hop Scotch Night Club in Fort Pierre.  Stanley County Sheriff Brad Rathbun says in a press release that officials were called Saturday morning about 8:30 a.m. to the report that an undetermined amount of money had been taken from a safe at the business; along with some other items.  A Stanley County Deputy that responded noted a suspect leaving the scene and a pursuit followed.  Rathbun says the deputy chased the suspect vehicle south of Fort Pierre on Highway 83 at speeds that were said to be more than 90 miles per hour.  Rathbun says the deputy’s car got stuck on a rural road off Highway 83 and Pierre Police officers were able to back up the deputy with the use of a four-wheel drive vehicle.  As part of a search conducted by various law enforcement agencies, the suspect, 36-year-old Cody W. Cruse, was located along with his vehicle in a Quonset near the intersection of 294th Street and 223rd Avenue in rural Lyman County.  Cruse was taken into custody about 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.  Rathbun says Cruse is being held at the Hughes County Jail on felony charges that include Third Degree Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools and Grand Theft.  Besides the Pierre Police Department, agencies that assisted the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office with the search and response on the incident included the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Lyman County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and BIA Police from the Lower Brule Indian Reservation.  The Stanley County Sheriff’s Office and DCI continue to investigate the burglary.  Cruse is expected to make an initial appearance in the case this afternoon.
