PIERRE / FORT PIERRE SD -A minimum-security inmate Stacie Cottier, age 33 from Pierre was placed on escape status Wednesday evening after she left her community service jobsite without authorization in Pierre Wednesday night. She was recaptured later by the Stanley County Sheriff’s Department south of Fort Pierre at approximately 12:25 a.m. on July 13. She was transported to the Hughes County Jail.
Cottier is serving an eight-year sentence out of Pennington County for aggravated assault.
Failing to return to custody following an assignment or temporary leave constitutes second-degree escape, a class 5 felony, and is punishable by a maximum of five years in prison. South Dakota Codified Law 22-11A-5 states that any person who conceals any prisoner knowing that the prisoner has escaped is guilty of a Class 5 felony.
There are nearly 500 minimum-security inmates assigned to community service projects across the state.
