Murder Trial for Slain Pierre Teen Finally Set to Begin

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The trial for a Pierre teenager charged with killing his high school classmate will finally begin in Winner this week more than 1 1/2 years after the boy’s death.

Braiden McCahren, 18, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the December 2012 shooting death of 16-year-old Dalton Williams. McCahren was 16 at the time of the shooting at his home.

The trial has been delayed nearly half a dozen times as attorneys from both sides contest what evidence can be used, who can testify and whether McCahren should be tried as an adult. He will be.

The only other witness to the shooting has said McCahren loaded a semi-automatic shotgun before shooting. Attorneys for McCahren have said he didn’t know it was loaded.
