PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governor basketball team had a 16 point lead early in the third period but could not hold on as Harrisburg downed the Governors 71-68 in overtime Thursday night in Pierre. The Tigers outscored the Governors 14-11 in the extra stanza after Sam Edman hit a 3 pointer to send the game into the overtime period with 2.8 seconds left in regulation. The Governors led throughout the first half and had a 33-26 lead at halftime. But Harrisburg rallied and cut the Governor lead to 3 by the third quarter break and had as much as a 8 point lead in the 4th quarter until the Governors came back to tie the game at the end of regulation. Brady VanHolland’s basket and free throw with 19 second left in the overtime period put Harrisburg on top to stay. VAn Holland had 19 points to pace Harrisburg while Nick Hoyt came off the bench to score 18 for the Tigers who won their 5th straight. The Governors dropped their second straight and were led by Brad Dean with 20. Edman and Peyton Zabel each had 15 as the Governors record fell to 9 and 9 on the season. Pierre is back in action tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Brandon Valley in their regular season home finale. Tip off of the varsity game is scheduled for 5:30 pm and coverage on the RIVER 927-FM begins at 5 pm.
