Georgia M. Soper 1929 – 2019

REE HEIGHTS, SD – Georgia M. Soper, 89, of Ree Heights, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019 at Avera McKennan ICU, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. A prayer service will be 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 28, 2019 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller with visitation one-hour prior. Burial will be at a later date at Morningside Cemetery, Ree Heights.

Georgia Mae Rombough was born at the Stobbs farm southwest of Wessington, SD to Bernard and Lucy (Stobbs) Rombough on February 22, 1929. She attended grade school at the Rombough School, ½ mile south of their home and went on to attended St. Lawrence and Miller High Schools. Following school Georgia worked as a waitress at the Coffee Cup Café and the Square Deal Grocery.

In 1946 Georgia married Jack Cook of Ree Heights at First Presbyterian Church in Miller. They made their home on the Cook Ranch south of Ree Heights where they were blessed with two sons and a daughter.

Throughout the years Georgia was involved with Cub Scouts, Jobs Daughters, Hilltop Grange and served on county and state Democrat committees for many years. She became the Ree Heights mail carrier in 1966, delivering mail for the next 20 years. Following her retirement, Georgia was appointed to the SD Real Estate Commission and was active in the Presbyterian Church.

In 1980, Georgia and Jack started raising registered Longhorn Cattle, which she enjoyed so much. They raised them together until Jack’s passing in 1992. Georgia spent much of her free time gardening, feeding birds, working with her flowers, crocheting, and doing oil paintings. Most of all she enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In 1999 Georgia married Don Soper of Gettysburg. They lived at the Cook ranch until 2009 when they moved into Miller. Don passed away in September of 2014.

Georgia’s life will be cherished by her children: Mike (Shirley) Cook of Ree Heights and Jackie (Jerry) Poindexter of Miller; grandchildren: Tracy Cook of Torrington, WY, John Cook of Sioux Falls, Jim (Marlene) Cook and Pamela (Ben) Phillips, all of Alakanuk, AK, Vance (Rikki) Cook of Stratford, IA, Pete (Dawne) Poindexter of Sioux Falls, Andy (Rachael) Poindexter of Miller, and Matt (Heather) Poindexter of Sioux Falls; 24 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; one brother, Ron (Jo) Rombough of Hill City; and two sisters-in-law: Rhoda Rombough of Miller and Mavis Rombough of Virgil, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; son, Terry Cook; grandson, Robert Cook; sisters: Marion Borah, Bernita Niederauer, Elaine Littlefield, Edie Hathaway, and Fern Peck; brothers: Don and Everet Rombough; and daughter-in-law, Tess Cook.
