FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Fort Pierre Fire Department spent over an hour yesterday at the site of a vehicle fire along Bad River Road. Fort Pierre Fire Chief Rick Cronin says crews were told that a pickup was on fire about 1:20 p.m. south of Wendte. He says the truck was located on a trail off the road and two people at the site of the vehicle fire were able to contain it to the pickup by shoveling dirt into the engine compartment. Cronin says their work also kept the blaze from spreading into any nearby grass. Fire crews put out a few smoldering spots to ensure the fire was completely out. It’s believed a break in a transmission line blew fluids onto the engine of the pickup-resulting in the fire. Cronin says the fire was contained to under the hood and didn’t spread into the cab. He says some wires were burned, but the damage was not serious. Firefighters returned to the fire station about 3:00 p.m. yesterday.
