ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota senior middle blocker Melissa Firtko was named The Summit League’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week in a league release on Monday after tying the school block record for a three-set match in the Coyotes sweep of Tulane last Friday. It’s the second time in her career that she has received the honor. Firtko, a native of Racine, Wis., recorded seven total blocks against the Green Wave and added nine kills on 11 attacks during the win. She later recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 10 blocks in USD’s Friday matchup against North Dakota, and had 11 kills, eight digs and eight blocks in the rematch against UND on Saturday. Overall, Firtko recorded 31 kills, 25 blocks and had an attack percentage of .361 during the weekend.
