The Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment and Children’s Home Society is hosting a free screening of a documentary that chronicles the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent toxic stress.
“Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope” will be shown on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 5-6:30pm at Capital University Center (925 East Sioux Ave.) in Pierre. The showing will be held in Auditorium Room 106. Doors will open at 4:30pm and a panel discussion will follow the screening.
Resilience chronicles a new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators and communities who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction and disease. Toxic stress is now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression. Extremely stressful childhood experiences can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior.
