PIERRE, SD – Clarence Coder, 91, of Pierre, went to his eternal home on December 22, 2018. A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held at 10:30am, Monday, December 31, 2018 at Feigum Funeral Home with a greeting time prior from 10:00am – 10:30am. Inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Clarence Howard Coder was born on August 6, 1927 to Howard and Bessie (Sawtell) Coder. He spent his early years along the Niobrara River in Nebraska. He attended rural school until high school in Gordon, NE. He went into the Naval Reserve from 1945-1946.
Clarence met Doris Moore at a USO dance in Gordon, NE where their romance lasted 71 years. When he started his family he was a milkman. Because of a mentor he was able to start a career as a powerhouse operator in Pickstown, SD at the Fort Randall Dam. In 1961 he transferred to the Oahe Dam in Pierre, SD where he retired after 32 years of service to the Corps of Engineers. He then worked part-time at the American Legion until October 31, 2018.
Clarence could fix anything. It if wasn’t’ broken, he would break it so it could be fixed.
Clarence was a nature lover. His favorite past time was drives to Farm Island and his nature walks and bike rides on LaFramboise Island. In his later years when he couldn’t work as hard he loved feeding the birds. He loved his family. His children, grandchildren and one great grandchild were his world. All of them have wonderful memories of time spent with Clarence.
Clarence is survived by his wife Doris; children: Shirley (Carl) Arndt, BIsmarck, ND, Tom (Gabi) Englewood, OH, Joyce (Dean) Pudwill, Pollock, SD, Charlie (Theresa), Edmund, OK, and Doug (Leslie), Santa Rosa, CA; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sisters, Helen and Alice and his brother Jack.
