April Sobriety Checkpoints
Apr 1 – Apr 30 all-day

Sobriety Checkpoints are planned in 19 SD counties during April.

The checkpoints are conducted by the South Dakota Highway Patrol as a way to discourage people from drinking and then driving. All told, 24 checkpoints are scheduled to be held during the month.

April Checkpoints are planned for the counties of Brown, Brule, Butte, Clay, Codington, Davison, Grant, Hughes, Jerauld, Lake, Lawrence, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, Roberts, Spink, Stanley, Walworth and Yankton.

Pierre Area Cornhole League Registration is now OPEN

Pierre Area Cornhole League Registration is now OPEN. Registration Due by May 8 at 5:00 pm on the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce website

$80 per team, must be paid online at time of registration (we take Mastercard and Visa). Teams consist of a pair of players. Games begin May 15 and run through the beginning of August. Year end tournaments will be held on August 7 and 14.

Games will be played Monday nights at 6:30 pm at Hipple Park next to the chamber. Multiple divisions for members interested in any level of play!

No games will be scheduled on May 29 or July 3rd.

When registering, please be sure to include your team name, both team members, complete mailing address, email and cell phone for each team member.

Spring is here and the South Dakota Wheat Yield Contest is back! Producers are encouraged to submit an application by May 15th.

Applications can be picked up at participating sponsors: CHS Midwest Cooperative, CHS Northern Plains, CHS Southwest Grains, Wheat Growers Elevator, North Central Farmers Elevator, Oahe Grain Corporation, Sioux Nation, Dakota Mill & Grain or the SD Wheat, Inc. office.

Awards will be presented at Ag Horizons in Pierre on December 6, 2017. First place in each District will receive $500. Second place in each District will receive $300.

To enter, you must be an SDWI member in good-standing. A one-year membership ($100) can be included with your entry fee.

The sand box filling will be held April 29th starting at 8am. Wheelbarrows full of sand will cost $5.00 and will be delivered to exactly the spot you specify.  Multiple wheelbarrow loads are no problem.   To request sand, please contact the Chamber of Commerce at 224-7361 to be put on the list.  Don’t forget to specify where you want the sand placed.

This year the Pierre/Fort Pierre Lions Club will again provide sand for sandboxes, gardens, paver filling, or other needs around your home.  This annual fundraiser provides resources for sight screening, eye exams, eye glasses, and other sight related needs in our community.  This year the Lions expect to entertain  more than 25 requests to support sight issues in our community.

Discovery Center Internships Available for Teens

Applications for spring and summer internships at the Growing Up Gardening nutrition and gardening program associated with the Discovery Center are available.  Spring program requires 70 hour time commitment of $700 and a $2100 stipend for the summer/fall program. The US Department of Labor Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture regulation prohibits 14-15 year olds from operating farm tractors and attached powered equipment unless the youth has successfully completed an approved safe tractor and machinery operation training program. 12-13 year olds cannot take the driving portion of HOSTA, but are welcome to participate in the classroom portion. 16-18 year olds are not required to complete the driving portion, but are welcome for the training.

Fort Pierre City Clean-up, the City is strongly encouraging the pruning and trimming of trees at this time. Local residents must place their material curbside no later than 8am May 1st. 

All items left on the curbside must be left in piles separated by categories such as rubble, metal (which includes white goods), and tree trimmings. If these items are not separated they will not be picked up. The City will not be taking any household garbage, tires, or appliances with freon. Special consideration will be given to the disabled and elderly but please call in advance.

Youth Conservation Camp

The Youth Conservation Camp will be held the week of June 4th through June 10th at Camp Bob Marshall in the Black Hills. This is a good camp for students who will be in grades 9-11th next fall.

May 8, 9, and 11th Riggs High School students will be performing the spring play Agatha Rex at 7pm and 5:30 pm on the 11th. You can get tickets at the door, adults $5, students $3, activity passes accepted as well.

The play is about a girl who stands up for her beliefs, despite the consequences. She is the student council president and school valedictorian, with an important college scholarship on the line. Nevertheless she stands up to the Principal of the school for not applying the rules equally to all students. Will she get expelled too…?

Senior Hannah Booth plays Agatha Rex to senior Nolan Ortbahn’s strict Dr. Creon the school’s principal. Davis Anderson and Zane Austin play Agatha’s younger brothers who cause the trouble in the first place. Little sister Irene Rex is played by Jaina Patten. Harry Creon, the principal’s son and boyfriend to Agatha is played by Tim Walsh. Hannah Gates and Emily Johnson play the military style hall monitors. The modern Greek style chorus is made up by Bryce Mertz, Nancy Li, Anya Jones, Melinda Clementson, Kaitlin Pitlick, Hannah Hansen, William Hodges and Jack Ferris. Kenzie Trujillo represents the PTA as Ms. Berius. This production is directed by Jenny Hodges.

Farm Island Kids Fishing Day
May 20 @ 8:00 am – 11:30 am

Kids Fishing day is scheduled for May 20th at Farm Island Recreation Area. Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. and a presentation by GFP fisheries personnel starting at 9 a.m. Fishing starts at 9:30 a.m and ends at 11:30 a.m. with a picnic for the kids and awarding of prizes.

This is also the free fishing weekend and free admission weekend at all SD State Parks.

Backyard BBQ Competition & Barn Dance
Jul 3 all-day

During the Ft. Pierre Rodeo, a BBQ Competition will take place all day before the Barn Dance on July 3rd in the Expo Center. This is open to any and all BBQ enthusiasts to bring down their grills and compete! After the contest, we will open to the public to come try all the food. Ticket proceeds to benefit the renovation of the Ft. Pierre Verendrye Museum.

Entry fee is $20  at the start of cooking, all entry fees will be paid back in prizes. Cooking may begin at 9am Judging will be at 4pm. The public is invited to come at 5pm sharp, the cost will be $15 per person, kids under 10 are free. Beer will be available for purchase on site in the Expo building.
