As a reminder, fireworks may be discharged between 9 am and 10:30 pm from June 29 through July 2 and on July 5, and until 12 midnight on July 3 and 4. Bottle rockets must be at least 14 inches in length with a rocket motor length of at least 2.5 inches. No sky lanterns are allowed to be sold or discharged.

“Tales on the River”

Every Thursday evening during the summer, with the exception of the 4th of July week, Short Grass Arts Council brings you “ Tales on the River”.  Each week this popular event showcases a speaker who will discuss topics such as books, arts, events, history, what’s happening in the area, humor and even well known crime cases. Come and enjoy a fun evening at the Moose Lodge in Fort Pierre at 7 p.m. Admission is FREE and the Ladies of the Moose provide a light supper for $5 from 6-6:45 p.m.

U.S Sen. John Thune is currently seeking college students to serve as fall interns in his office in Washington, D.C., as well as his offices in Aberdeen, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls.

Interns in Thune’s state offices will participate in constituent service and state outreach activities, while students in the Washington, D.C., office will have the opportunity to witness the legislative process, give Capitol building tours, and attend Senate votes and hearings. Both in-state and Washington, D.C., internships will allow students to work closely with constituents, hone their research and writing skills, and learn a multitude of valuable office skills.

Backyard BBQ Competition & Barn Dance
Jul 3 all-day

During the Ft. Pierre Rodeo, a BBQ Competition will take place all day before the Barn Dance on July 3rd in the Expo Center. This is open to any and all BBQ enthusiasts to bring down their grills and compete! After the contest, we will open to the public to come try all the food. Ticket proceeds to benefit the renovation of the Ft. Pierre Verendrye Museum.

Entry fee is $20  at the start of cooking, all entry fees will be paid back in prizes. Cooking may begin at 9am Judging will be at 4pm. The public is invited to come at 5pm sharp, the cost will be $15 per person, kids under 10 are free. Beer will be available for purchase on site in the Expo building.

Local Area Veteran Service Fireworks Giveaway

The local area veteran service organizations have come together to offer a free gift to local veterans children – a free bag of city approved fireworks. This will take place at the Legion cabin at the end of Pierre St. on July 3rd starting at 5 PM thru 6:30 PM. The veteran must pick up the fireworks and show proof or veteran status. Fireworks are for ages group 5-7 & 8-11. If for any reason the veteran cannot get there during this time call 224-7681 before noon on the 3rd of July and arrangements will be made.

Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons Safety Day

Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons is holding a Safety Day at the American Creek Marina and Campground July 8 in Chamberlain. This is open to all youth, not just Girl Scouts.

Safety Day is a chance to learn basic water training, street/fire safety, and the activities include training with the Army Corps of Engineers, Fish & Game, Emergency Management, EMS, Chamberlain Police and Fire and more!

Potter County Sportsman’s Club Walleye Fishing Tournament

The Potter County Sportman’s Club will host the Whitlock Bay Walleye Fishing Tournament on July 8th and 9th on Lake Oahe west of Gettysburg.

An extra $1,000 has been donated to the award’s payout for the anglers this year. This is the first year the Sportsman’s Club will host the tournament alone and look to carry-on the tournament success previously attained by the Gettysburg American Legion. Registration, rules meeting and calcutta will take place Friday July 7th at Brown’s Hunting Ranch on Highway 212.  The tournament is open to two-person and three-person teams, and teams can register at pcsc.formstack.com/forms/whitlock2017, or by going to the Sportsman’s Club’s Facebook page. The Dakota Western Heritage Festival announces that advance tickets are now on sale for The Cowboy Concert, which will be at the Expo Center in Fort Pierre on September 16th starting at 7:30pm.

The headliner is Country Music Legend Suzy Bogguss, opening the Cowboy Concert will be Cowboy Musician Susie Knight and R.P. Smith, Cowboy Poet.

Advance tickets are just $25 each and are available at the following locations: Lynn’s Dakotamart (Pierre & Fort Pierre), First Dakota National Bank (Pierre & Blunt), Prairie Pages in downtown Pierre, State Farm Insurance – Gary Heintz, Bad River Furniture in Fort Pierre, Total Beauty in Fort Pierre, Dakota Prairie Bank in Fort Pierre.

Tickets are limited to just 600 seats. If any tickets remain, they will be sold at the door for $35 each.
