State Amatuer Tournament in Mitchell Moves into Final Weekend

MITCHELL, S.D. – Clark and Wynot, Nebraska moved into the semi finals of the State Class B Amatuer baseball tournament in Mitchell on Thursday night.  Clark advanced with a 5-2 win over Tabor.  Clark scored two runs in the 8th inning to gain some breathing room in the game that saw them outhit Tabor 5-4.  Brady Welk had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s to lead Clark while Jay Huber pitched 7 innings to pick up the win and Welk pitched two innings of scoreless relief.  Wynot advanced by winning a 18-10 slugfest over Irene in a game that saw the two teams combine for 31 hits.  But Irene’s 7 errors did them in.  Wynot broke a 10-10 tie with an 8 run 9th inning led by Lee Heimes 4 hit 4 RBI contest.  Scott Morrison pitched 8 innings while Jay Thayler and Heimes combined for a scorless 9th inning.  Eric Hames and Wiepen each had 3 RBI’s for Wynot.  Simon Healy had 3 hits for Irene.


3 Class A games and 2 Class B quarterfinal games are on the schedule for today at the South Dakota Amateur Baseball tournament as it moves into the final weekend at Mitchell.  Class A games will be played this afternoon with two games scheduled for 1:30 pm at Cadwell Park and at Drake Field.  Defending State A champion Renner plays Yankton at Drake Field while the Vermillion Red Sox face the Sioux Falls Brewers at Cadwell Park.  At 3:30 pm Castlewood will face the Sioux Falls Squirrels.  Tonight, two Class B quarterfinal games will be played at Cadwell Park when the Parkston Mudcats take on Crofton, Neb. at 6 pm and defending State B champion Alexandria goes up against Flandreau.  The semi finals for the tournament will be played tommorrow (Saturday) with the championship games for both the Class A and Class B divisions scheduled for Sunday.
