PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Fire Department spent about 2 1/2 hours at a hay bale fire this morning which burned in an open field near the Pierre Indian Learning Center. Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says firefighters were told of the fire before 5:00 a.m. this morning. The bales were located a few hundred yards from a dorm at the center and no buildings were threatened. Paul says the bales were lined up in a row and all were burning when fire crews arrived at the scene. About 30 firefighters worked to put out the fire and the Pierre Rural Fire Department assisted the Pierre Fire Department. Paul says bale fires take some time to extinguish because the burning hay has to be spread out to allow firefighters to water down all levels of each bale. It doesn’t appear that the fire was suspicious in nature-according to Paul.
