SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson from South Dakota and U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon from North Dakota are sponsoring a three-day conference in hopes of raising awareness of human trafficking and related crimes.

Johnson, medical professionals and a senior adviser at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday will address the public’s responsibility in preventing and handling human trafficking and sexual assault cases.

Johnson says many people believe human trafficking originates overseas and don’t realize there are homegrown victims. He says his office has indicted 20 people in the last four years on human trafficking charges.

The event begins Tuesday and runs through Thursday in Sioux Falls. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice and Avera Health.
