PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Rural Fire Department was assisted by Fort Pierre firefighters in putting out a fire in wheat stubble late Tuesday afternoon. Pierre Rural Fire Chief Jason Roggow says firefighters were dispatched to a location off 293rd Avenue and 203rd Street about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday where it was reported a wheat field fire was burning and that it covered about two acres. On arrival, they discovered the fire was larger than that and was burning in wheat stubble. Firefighters were able to get a handle on the fire and were on hand about two hours. Roggow estimates about 40 acres of stubble burned. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
