South Dakotans Struggle Saturday at NHSFR

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – Rapid City Central graduate Shane O’Connell posted the best bareback ride of the night, a 75-point ride, to win the Saturday night championship short go and a big move from 20th to eighth in the average final standings at the National Finals High School Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming.  O’Connell then completed a two-for-two night with a solid 76-point bull ride, the second best effort of the round, and another impressive leap from 20th to sixth in the average.  Erin Kenzy came into the girls cutting short go sixth in the average with a 289.   But she placed 11th placing in the round relegated the Iona cowgirl to seventh in the average with a 426.  Boys cutting competitor Sawyer Strand of Hartford moved up from 11th to a tie for eighth in the final average.  Chesney Nagel of Springfield, fifth in the average coming in, and Faith’s Katy Miller 14th coming in failed to get a loop down Saturday night and fell to 15th and 17th respectively in Tie Down Roping.  Trig Clark of Medown also struggled out of the chute posting a 59-point ride in bare back to finish ninth in the average and exited early in his saddle bronc ride.  And in pole bending, Letcher’s Bailey Moody posted a 20.34-second time and moved up from 11th to eight in the final standings.  The final round in the NHSFR is today (Sunday).
