ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – South Dakota high school rodeo competitors continued to light up the 2014 National High School Rodeo Finals leaderboard on Friday. Eagle Butte’s Treye LaPlante turned in a 76-point ride in Bull Riding, the best of the morning performance at the Sweetwater Events Complex. LaPlante’s performance win moved him into 11th in the average, one spot ahead of teammate JD Phelps. Katy Miller was among those making her second appearance on the leaderboard as the Faith senior placed fourth in her second-round breakaway roping trip with a 3.52-second rip and loop. Other top 10 finishers in Friday night’s 11th performance were Chesney Nagel with a sixth-place finish (9.61) in goat tying; Kaylee Clark, eighth in goat tying; Sawyer Strand, eighth in boys cutting; and Dylan Riggins of Kadoka who was seventh in bareback. Following Friday performances, Team South Dakota continued its march up the team leaderboard, sitting third in overall with the girls standing third and the boys standing fifth.
