RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A group of Oglala Lakota tribal members say they’ve gathered enough signatures to put a measure on the November ballot to rename Shannon County.
The Rapid City Journal reports that tribal organizers hope to rename the county that makes up the majority of the land on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The new proposed name is Oglala Lakota County.
Shannon County is named after Peter Shannon, a chief justice of the Dakota Territory Supreme Court who later helped negotiate land deals with the Lakota.
Tribal member Jesse Short Bull says the state didn’t ask the Lakota people for input when it was named. He says they would’ve rejected naming it after Shannon.
Signatures for the referendum still need to be validated by the Fall River State’s Attorney’s office.
