PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) As central South Dakotans enjoy their time outdoors this summer, Game, Fish and Parks officials remind people to be safe on local waterways. Sully County Conservation Officer Andy Schmahl says the G F & P patrols the river during the busy summer months-and is mostly concerned with making sure boaters have safety equipment-like appropriate size life jackets for all boat occupants.

Schmahl also says those with boats over a certain size need a throwable flotation device and a functioning fire extinguisher.

Schmahl says boating handbooks are helpful and inform boaters of rules and requirements. He says Conservation Officers take boating safety very seriously.

Besides doing boat safety inspections, Schmahl says officers also check licenses and perform other duties while patroling area waters by boat. To check an online copy of the Boating Safety Handbook, visit http://www.boat-ed.com/assets/pdf/handbook/sd_handbook_entire.pdf
