ELMHURST, Ill. — South Dakota’s NCAA national champion pole vaulter Bethany (Buell) Firsick has been named The Summit League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the league’s faculty athletic representatives and announced Monday. The Award is the most prestigious individual honor given by the league. Firsick, a four-time first-team All-American (twice indoor, twice outdoor), is South Dakota’s first female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree and the second Coyote in as many years to earn the distinction. Distance runner Jeff Mettler won the men’s award last summer.
