19 South Dakota Teens Training as Youth Troopers in Pierre

South Dakota Highway Patrol Patch

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – Nineteen South Dakota teenagers will train with the Highway Patrol in Pierre for the third annual Youth Trooper Academy this week.  The American Legion is a co-sponsor of the event and helped select the soon-to-be high school seniors.   Maj. Rick Miller is the Highway Patrol assistant superintendent.  He says Highway Patrol staff look forward to the academy.  The veteran troopers mentor and monitor the young participants. The students will experience some of the same training as Highway Patrol recruits.  Other law enforcement officers will contribute to the classroom and field instruction. The teens will get training in firearms safety, service dog handling and criminal law among other topics.  The academy ends with a graduation ceremony on Friday.
