MANDAN, N.D. – The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team won their first game of the season Saturday at a tournament in Mandan, North Dakota. Pierre defeated Grafton, N.D. 6-3 in the first of two games played on the day. In the second game, the Grand Forks Royals dominated the Post 8 squad winning 16-1 to leave Pierre with a 1 and 7 record on the season. In the win against Grafton, Pierre scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th to break open a 3-3 tied. Both teams had 10 hits in the game. Isaac Grode and Bradley Dean each had 2 hits apeice and Ben Eisenbeiz drove in a pair of runs for Pierre. Justin Berheim went 5 innings in picking up his first win of the season striking out 3. Cooper Walton struck out 4 over two innings of relief. Pierre’s success wa short lived as Grand Forks scored 10 runs in the second inning and 6 more in the third to end the game on the 3 inning 15 run mercy rule. The Royals only had 4 hits in the game and Pierre committed 3 errors. Shay Rienke and Justin Berheim were the only Pierre players to get hits in the game for Post 8. Nick Rabern pitched an inning and a third in taking the loss. Pierre will wrap up tournament play with an afternoon game against the host team Mandan Chiefs at 2:30 pm Sunday.
The Pierre Junior Legion baseball team went 0 and 2 Saturday at the Jim Skull Memorial baseball tournament being hosted by Rapid City Post 320. Pierre dropped a 8-4 verdict to Grandview, Colorado in their first game Saturday. Then the Post 8 Junior Legion lost 7-5 to Sioux Falls East. The tournament was rained out on Friday night and had to be rescheduled. The Junior Legion will play at noon today against a team to be determined and then have a 4 pm game against Spearfish.
