PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Thursday brought a community tour of the City of Pierre for the Mayor of the Capital City; City Administrator Leon Schochenmaier and commissioners. Mayor Laurie Gill says the tours are held to give city officials a chance to see first-hand what’s happening in the city…and ask questions.
Gill said the group visited various sites including northeast Pierre, where the new Menard’s store will be.
Gill says the tour also traveled the alternate gravel covered route that vehicles are now using while construction is underway on North Garfield Avenue. She says northeast Pierre is the hub of lots of construction activity-including the site of a new elementary school north of Beck Motors and an 81-unit apartment complex being built near Eagle Creek.
In central Pierre, infrastructure work is being done near upper Pierre Street which has resulted in road closures and Gill says motorists won’t be able to use the street where Pleasant Drive intersects with Pierre Street for about another week or so. Gill says once traffic patterns are returned to normal there, crews will dig up upper Pierre Street, replace utilities below the road and completely reconstruct the street. She says business owners will also have the chance to upgrade their storefronts and believes the final product will enhance that part of town.
Gill says with all the construction work around town, residents should note they can get weekly construction updates through city commission meetings and those who have questions, can contact City Hall.
