PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Legislature’s Executive Board is interviewing candidates for the leader of a group that supports state lawmakers by drafting bills and estimating the financial impact of legislation.
The board is interviewing five candidates Monday and Tuesday to identify the future director of the Legislative Research Council.
The position is being held since last fall by Interim Director Fred Schoenfeld.
No one in the Legislative Research Council is involved in interviewing or selecting the new director.
The last director of the non-partisan council James Fry left in September, and Schoenfeld is scheduled to retire at the end of this week. He says he may stay on if necessary, but he’s no longer “critical to the process.”
Schoenfeld says the new position of deputy director will ease the transition.
