PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A new feature was added to one of Pierre’s elementary schools on Friday. What is being called a “Buddy Bench” was placed at the playground of Buchanan Elementary School. The idea for the bench came from one of the school’s students, 7-year-old Kailey Wallman. She had seen that another school had added a bench-to be used by students who are feeling lonely or are looking for a friend. Then other students know that person needs someone to talk to. Wallman says she suggested the bench to school officials, who gave it the okay.
Wallman also mentioned the idea to her Grandfather-Steve Bass of Modern Woodmen of America. The organization paid for the new bench through its “Good Neighbors Project” and it was installed last week. Bass says it was decided to purchase a metal bench and add signs designating the purpose of the feature.
Bass says plans call for similar benches to be added at Jefferson Elementary, at Stanley County Elementary and eventually at the new elementary school in Pierre.
Bass, Buchanan Elementary Principal Kurt Swanson and district Buildings and Grounds workers put the bench in on the east side of Buchanan School Friday afternoon.
