PIERRE, S.D. - (DRG News) Hundreds of hogs housed in a building at a commercial pig farm near Pierre perished in a fire that was reported Sunday morning. The Pierre Rural Fire Department’s Sean Kruger says the fire was reported by a passerby just after six Sunday morning at Christensen Farms, about 6-7 miles northeast of Pierre. He says firefighters found about half the hog barn had already been engulfed by flames when they arrived at the site. He says employees dealt with caring for the animals while firefighters worked to put out the fire. A firewall in the structure helped protect hogs in the other half of the building. Kruger says it’s believed the structure held about 1,000 pigs and estimates mortality in the 400-500 animal range. Firefighters spent about seven hours at the fire and it was out by about 1:00 p.m. yesterday. He says the fire appears to have started near the office area of the structure, but indicates there is nothing suspicious about the blaze. There is no estimate of damage and no one was injured. Kruger says there are no other structures located near the building that burned. The Pierre Rescue Squad assisted Pierre Rural Firefighters in putting out yesterday’s blaze.
