PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Two guests of Tuesday’s Think and Drive Stay Alive program talked about the ordeal their family has been through since a 2012 alcohol related accident. Tayla Brooks had been drinking excessively before she crashed her car in mid-June of 2012 at the age of 19. About a week before her crash, Tayla’s boyfriend had committed suicide. At the time of the wreck, she was alone in the vehicle and was badly injured. Tayla’s father Robert Brooks says the moment his family learned about his daughter’s accident, they were in total shock. He says family members were told that Tayla’s injuries were very bad and that it was possible she wouldn’t survive.
Brooks says his daughter is tough-having survived and overcome what was a very debilitating accident.
Tayla’s Mom, Valerie Morris says she was in denial when she was informed of her daughter’s accident. She says she spent hours praying.
Tayla Brooks has had to learn how to walk and do many things all over again since the accident and says to this day, she goes for treatment at a brain injury rehabilitation center in Rapid City.
Tayla Brooks says she hopes that those who have heard her story think about their actions-and consider the long term results of what they do.
One other speaker featured during Tuesday’s program was Pierre Police Department Chaplain-Tim Bresnahan. We’ll feature his comments in a future update.
