PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Today brings the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Stew Feed to Pierre. The events are sponsored by the Pierre-Fort Pierre Lions Club and the Irish Club of Central South Dakota. The Irish Stew Feed starts at 4:30 p.m. today at the American Legion Cabin and the event is a fundraiser for the local Lions Club. Staging for the parade starts at 4:30 p.m. as well, near the intersection of Prospect and Grand Avenues by the Hughes County Courthouse. The parade starts at 5:15 p.m. and will travel down Pierre Street to the Legion Cabin. Irish Stew will be available before, during and after the parade. Gary Grittner of the local Lions organization says in the past, the fundraiser has helped pay for eyeglasses for kids and has also helped fund eye surgeries. This time, Grittner says money gathered through the feed will help with the cost of a device known as an engraver machine. He says the machine helps create graphs, pictures and other non-text material into books for those who read braille.
Grittner says funds will also pay for a machine that checks eye-health in children as young as six months old. He says the device will be brought to the Pierre area later this year to screen local youngsters’ vision.
Grittner says the cost for today’s Stew Feed is $6.00 for adults and $2.00 for those 10 years and younger.
