FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A number of people attended an Open House yesterday in Fort Pierre to offer words of appreciation to Mayor Sam Tidball-who will retire from the Mayor’s Office in early May. Tidball was on the Fort Pierre City Council from the early 1990′s to 1998 and has served eight two-year terms as Mayor. Yesterday was declared Sam Tidball Day in South Dakota by Governor Dennis Daugaard and several people streamed into the Fort Pierre Senior Center to honor Tidball Sunday afternoon. Tidball says during the past 23 years he has been involved in city government, lots has been done in Fort Pierre-thanks to the work of many.
Tidball says there are two areas where work is always underway and never lets up-economic development and infrastructure improvements.
Tidball says being Mayor brings challenges at times, but he equates the job to officiating a sporting event and says though decisions and rulings have to be made-they’re not always popular.
Tidball says after a new Mayor is sworn into office May 5, he wants to spend more time with family and friends. Four candidates are on next month’s ballot for Fort Pierre Mayor. City residents will choose between Gloria Hanson, Brian Scott, Charles Claussen and Rick Sass.
