PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota House has approved a bill that would ban abortions sought because of the gender of a fetus.

Representatives voted 60-10 for the bill after sponsors said people from some Asian nations are aborting female fetuses because they want sons. They say the practice could spread to South Dakota.

But opponents say there’s no evidence any abortions have been performed in South Dakota because a fetus wasn’t the gender wanted by a woman.

Opponents also say the bill would be unenforceable because a woman could not be forced to acknowledge she is seeking an abortion because of a fetus’s gender.

The bill would make it a felony for a doctor to knowingly perform an abortion because of a fetus’s gender.
