FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A family whose waterlogged home was often shown on news footage during the 2011 flood has decided to return to riverside living again. Rod and Dale Vizcarra’s house along Frontier Road north of Fort Pierre sat in flood waters during the summer of 2011 and had remained empty after the river subsided-as the family moved to a different residence. Recently, the flood damaged home was moved away to another location and the Vizcarra’s are now in the process of rebuilding a new house at the site of the previous structure. Rod Vizcarra says in the years since the flood, he and his wife looked at various options, but decided the best one was to have the old home removed and to build from the ground up.
Work was done to their previous home and the Vizcarra’s thought the structure was protected; following high waters in 1997. In starting with the new home, he says they decided to add plenty of dirt and raise the elevation of their property.
Vizcarra says the new home will be a bit smaller than the flooded home, but the design has been improved.
Vizcarra says they decided to return to river-living for several reasons.
Vizcarra says plans call for the new home to be complete and for his family to be moved in by middle to late summer.
