Carlos Walter “Carl” Sanborn was born on December 1, 1933 in Adrian Township near Ipswich, SD to Delmar and Nina Pearl “Benson” Sanborn. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Ipswich, graduating from Ipswich High School in 1951.

Following school he went to work for the South Dakota State Highway Department for three months prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for two years in the Marines as an Aircraft Electrician.

After being honorable discharged from service he returned home and took a job at the Ipswich Co-op Station and helped on the family farm.

Carl married Delphina (Dewald) Heinz on June 25, 1962. Three daughters were brought into the marriage (Glenda, Julie and Janeen) and two daughters were born to this union, Carla and Kristie.

They purchased his parents farm in 1964 and retired from active farming and moved to Ipswich in 1998.

Carl enjoyed having horses on the farm for his girls to enter in 4-H projects. His family and farm were the focus of his life. He was proud to still take care of CRP lands even after retirement. He kept a tractor in town so that he never got too far away from his love of farming.

Carl was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. He enjoyed golfing, visiting with friends and keeping up with current trends in farming. His children and grandchildren filled his heart with joy. Carl could often be found walking with his wife in the Holy Cross Gymnasium.

Carl died Friday, February 14, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Ipswich.

He is survived by his loving wife, Del of Ipswich; children, Kristie Wenger of Issaquah, WA, Carla (Dean) Zumbaum of Aberdeen, Janeen Swanlund of Kent, WA, Julie (Greg) Roskey of Oregon City, OR,and Glenda (Mark) Spalding of Lochbouie, CO; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Twila Ruden of Groton, SD and one sister-in-law, Joann Sanborn of Leola, SD.
