Carlos Walter “Carl” Sanborn was born on December 1, 1933 in Adrian Township near Ipswich, SD to Delmar and Nina Pearl “Benson” Sanborn. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Ipswich, graduating from Ipswich High School in 1951.
Following school he went to work for the South Dakota State Highway Department for three months prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for two years in the Marines as an Aircraft Electrician.
After being honorable discharged from service he returned home and took a job at the Ipswich Co-op Station and helped on the family farm.
Carl married Delphina (Dewald) Heinz on June 25, 1962. Three daughters were brought into the marriage (Glenda, Julie and Janeen) and two daughters were born to this union, Carla and Kristie.
