MOBRIDGE, S.D. — (DRG News)  On January 3rd at approximately 6:15 p.m. staff of the Windjammer Lounge, located on the second floor on the south side of the complex, noticed smoke coming in from the hallway.  It was then found that a smoldering fire had started under the stairway in the north east corner of the facility.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. the Mobridge Fire Department with mutual aid from the Glenham Fire Department and the Mobridge Ambulance Service, responded to the scene.  The fire was contained to the area of the stairway. No one was injured in the incident.

I spoke with Jeff Jackson, owner of the property, and he indicated that the cause is still unknown.  He stated that because the stairway is made of concrete and steel, as well as the concrete block walls of the building, the fire was concentrated to this area.

He tells us that the only thing in the area where the fire occurred, were some bed sheets and chairs for storage.

The majority of the damage is by smoke.  He stated that approximately 35 rooms, the pool, the restaurant and the bar are the main areas affected.  The second floor sustained more damage because the smoke from the fire went up the stairway and moved throughout.

Jeff stated they have crews on site and are working quickly to get the facility ready for the Mobridge Ice Fishing Tournament that starts Thursday.  His focus is to get the rooms ready and move out from there.  He will be contacting registered guests to keep them informed of the situation.  He does not believe the restaurant or bar will be ready in time.

A dollar amount of damage has not been determined as of yet.
