PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Spirits were high Tuesday as the Pierre/Fort Pierre area welcomed home the members of South Dakota National Guard’s 152nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. The unit deployed from Pierre just after the Fourth of July this year and the length of their service time in Afghanistan was shortened twice, resulting in the group being allowed to come home before Christmas. Governor Dennis Daugaard says being able to welcome troops home anytime-especially before Christmas-is a great thing.
Daugaard says that the number of South Dakotans that are being deployed overseas continues to decrease as time goes on.
Lt. Colonel Mike Oster, Commander of the 152nd said yesterday that his unit worked hard in the few months that they were in Afghanistan.
Oster said the unit really appreciated how local residents stepped up to offer support on their return home to South Dakota.
Now, Oster says members of the 152nd will spend two weeks of well-earned military leave and go back to their civilian jobs. He says the unit will get back again together on February 15.
