PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A candlelight vigil will be held this evening at a Pierre church, one-year after the death of a Pierre boy from gunshot wounds. A memorial vigil will be held tonight for Dalton Williams, who received fatal injuries in a shooting December 18, 2012 at the home of another Pierre teen. Williams was 16. Williams’ family is holding a candlelight vigil to start at 6:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church at 714 North Grand this evening. Those attending are being asked to wear yellow and to come help remember Dalton.
A 17-year-old Pierre boy is charged in Williams’ death. Braiden McCahren has pleaded not guilty to First Degree Murder and other charges for the shooting death of Williams in McCahren’s home. A trial was to be held next month in McCahren’s case, but that has been postponed. A judge ruled in September that McCahren should be tried as an adult, but the teen’s attorneys appealed to South Dakota’s Supreme Court, which ordered the judge to reconsider whether the trial should be held in adult or juvenile court. Now a bond hearing has been set for Monday and court officials indicate that two motions hearings are scheduled for January 23 and 30. McCahren remains in custody.
