PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Pierre’s City Commissioners were told Tuesday night that a task force is recommending no change in the number of deer to be harvested in town-as compared to the figure approved in 2012. Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill says the Deer Management Task Force has been working to decide how many deer should be harvested in town and recommended this year’s number be at 20. She says that is the same total the city was approved to harvest last year.
Gill says 20 seems to be an acceptable deer harvest number by most in the community. She says before the harvest can start, the task force’s recommendation must be approved by the Game, Fish and Parks Department.
Gill says a change will be made in how the meat from the harvested deer is distributed.
In the past, the deer meat was given out by picking a time when people could call to have their name added to a list on a first-come, first-served basis. Typically, that list would fill within minutes. Gill says it was decided to handle the meat distribution in a different manner this year.
