PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre teacher received an award this morning in front of several supporters; including Riggs High School staff and students; plus officials including the Governor and South Dakota’s Education Secretary. Shana Davis, a teacher at Riggs Academy, which is an alternate education site at Riggs, received the $25,000 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award during a school assembly. Davis did not know she was receiving the award until it was announced by Governor Dennis Daugaard. Also honoring Davis were State Education Secretary Melody Schopp and Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards. Davis is the only South Dakota educator to receive the award this year. She is a former Army reservist and Iraq War veteran who has taught for 12 years. She helped create Riggs Academy for at risk students five years ago. The Milken Educator Awards were set up to recognize the importance of outstanding educators and encourage talented young people to enter the teaching profession.
