Scarecrow Hollow Haunted House

MOBRIDGE, S.D  – (DRG News)  Scarecrow Hollow Haunted House in Mobridge, S.D., had their opening night on Friday, October 25th.  It is their 10th year of operation and this year’s theme is “Decade of Darkness.”  One could hear screaming and crying emitting from the house.

The following is a poem written by cast member Donald “Frog” Wilson:

Double double toil and trouble,
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
on this night of All Hallows’ Eve,
the fears you dream you should believe.
Come inside and you will see,
all the ghouls you hate are free.
The demons glare, the zombies drool,
it’s only your mind that makes you a fool.
We’ll do our best to give you a scare,
but souls inside will take you there.
Listen close the spirits you will hear,
Now watch your step, you enter here!

–Donald “Frog” Wilson (cast member)

What sets this haunted house apart from the others is that it was actually a former funeral home.  When you tour through the house you go through rooms that were once an embalming room, cold storage, viewing rooms, and so forth.

To put on a great haunt, this house uses 40 to 60 cast members.  The fun in scaring people is what brings many of them back year after year.  Several members told me that if a visitor is scared, they target them and become relentless.  Screams and crying is the food that feeds them. Cast members come from all around the area.  Some members even come from Wishek, N.D. Many people cannot make it through the whole house and have to be taken out through “chicken doors.”  Some people have not even made it past the first room!

This haunted house was first brought to life by Michael Oatman and Dawn Konold back in 2003.  The haunt has grown each year.  People come from far away just to get their thrill.  Past visitors have been from China, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Kansas.  This year on opening night there were visitors from Kansas City, M.O. Those visitors indicated that this house is better than many of the big attractions.  It is a more up close experience.

Money raised by the non-profit organization is given to other charities and groups in the Mobridge area.  The A.H. Brown Library of Mobridge provides concessions to raise money as well.

Regular admission is $10 and VIP admission, which gets you to the front of the line, is $20.  If you bring a canned good, you get a dollar off the price.  The food is then donated to the local food pantry to help those in the community that need it.

You can follow Scarecrow Haunted House on Facebook.  Also visit their website at www.scarecrowhollow.com for directions.  The house is located at 221 2nd Avenue East in Mobridge, S.D.
