GETTYSBURG, S.D. (DRG News) – On Monday, October 28th from 1:00 P.M to 6:15 P.M. and Tuesday, October 29 from 7:30 PM. to 12:30 P.M., United Blood Services will be having a blood drive. The drive will take place at Grace Bible Church, in Gettysburg, S.D., on both days. They have many openings and need donors. Due to farmers being in the field and High School athletes not being able to donate, they need many more donors to call and schedule appointments. You can call Dorothy Smith at 605-765-9706 to schedule an appointment or go to www.unitedbloodservices.org to schedule your own appointment.
Only six percent of the population has O-negative blood and it is the universal blood type, meaning any patient can receive O-negative blood.
“O negative can be given to anyone in an emergency when there is no time to cross-match the donor’s blood with the patient’s,” explained Abbie Titze, spokesperson for United Blood Services. “When you do the math, our community needs O negative donors to come in almost twice as often as everyone else!”
United Blood Services also encourages those who have never donated blood, to try now. “New blood donors are needed every day to ensure a stable blood supply. If you are O negative, or you don’t know your blood type, your community needs you to get involved,” said Abbie Titze.
To save time, donors can now fill out their Health History Questionnaire online at www.unitedbloodservices.org the day of their donation. To donate blood, volunteers must be at least 16 years old (16 year old donors need a minor donor permit which is available at the blood drive or online) and be in good health.
