PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Athletic Coaches Association has named their Riggs High School Athletes of the Week for the week that ended October 12th. Junior volleyball player Kelsey Schmitz and senior football player Alex Gray have earned the honors. Schmitz led Lady Gov volleyball hitters with 20 kills on Thursday in a 5 game win against Brookings and followed that up on Saturday with 13 kills and 4 blocks in a 5 game win at Brandon Valley. Gray’s was 20 of 34 for 281 yards passing and 2 touchdowns in the Governors loss at Yankton. His effort was the highest total yards of all quarterback’s in the state last Friday night and was only 5 yards from breaking the single game passing record for Pierre. And Alex did all of this with a stress fracture in his foot. Schmitz was nominated by her head coach Kacy Kienholz and Gray was nominated by his head coach Jayson Poppinga.
