FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Fort Pierre City Councilmember has announced her intention to seek the Mayor’s seat for Fort Pierre next year. Current Mayor Sam Tidball has already stated he doesn’t plan to run for re-election. Gloria Hanson said yesterday that she decided to run to lead the city for a number of reasons, including her love for the community where she grew up.
She currently serves as Executive Director of Capital Area United Way, and says she also has career experience in the private business sector, state government and has been a business owner.
The municipal election in Fort Pierre isn’t being held until April of next year. Hanson says though its early to announce her intentions, she is happy with the support people have already offered.
Hanson says she plans to speak with as many Fort Pierre residents as she can in the months leading up to the election and says ongoing development, streets and beautification efforts are all issues that are important for the community to continue working on.
Hanson said in a statement yesterday that her experience on the City Council has been a valuable education and has given her a good understanding of the issues and challenges that Fort Pierre faces. She describes her style of governance as “open, transparent and inclusive”. With the many developments underway in Fort Pierre, including Riverwalk Landing and other projects, Hanson says it’s a tremendously exciting time to live in the community.
