PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Governor Dennis Daugaard has had two opportunities this week to see the devastation suffered by several livestock producers as a result of the recent snowstorm in western parts of the state. Daugaard took a driving tour to select locations on Tuesday and yesterday, joined U.S. Senator John Thune and South Dakota’s Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch for an aerial tour of hard hit parts of the state where the storm killed thousands of livestock. Daugaard advises producers that have questions as they work to recover their operations-to call a helpline set up by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture.
Daugaard also repeats recent advice he heard which states that “self-worth is not tied to net worth” and says those who might be suffering some emotional stress as the recovery starts from the livestock storm deaths to also keep the helpline in mind.
Producers in Harding, Perkins, Ziebach, Shannon, Jackson, Jones, Bennett and Mellette counties can reach the helpline at 877-708-4357. Those in other locations can use that same number, or call 2-1-1.
