PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – State investigators will determine if a Pierre police officer’s use of a Taser on an 8-year-old girl amounted to excessive force.
Chief Bob Grandpre says he and Hughes County State’s Attorney Wendy Kloeppner asked for the outside review of Friday’s incident.
He says his department’s initial review showed the officers involved acted appropriately, but he wants an independent review by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office to avoid any appearance of bias.
Grandpre says the girl was holding a 4 1/2-inch knife to her chest and was not injured by the stun gun.
The girl’s father says the officer should be disciplined for using excessive force.
