PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as part of the month and an annual American Cancer Society fall fundraiser-two events were held in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area over the weekend. The American Cancer Society’s Bras for a Cause was held in Fort Pierre on Friday and Saturday brought a weather modified schedule for the annual ACS’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk near the Capitol Building in Pierre. Charlene Lund of the ACS’s Pierre office says Friday’s Bras for a Cause saw a good turnout, despite the inclement weather.
On Saturday, the lineup for the Making Strides walk was significantly changed because of the winds and chilly weather. The walk was still held, but it was centered around the Capitol grounds, instead of Hilger’s Gulch. Lund says only one of a handful of speakers was able to travel to Pierre for the program portion of the morning. She says Sara Olson, who is a fourth generation breast cancer survivor, spoke with those at the walk about a study regarding inherited gene mutations that can be linked to cancer.
The American Cancer Society started its annual fall Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser in mid-August with a kickoff breakfast in Pierre. Funds have been gathered locally through the Bras for a Cause and Making Strides Walk and money is also being raised statewide through November. Lund says the statewide goal for this year is $50,000.
