-State Transportation and Public Safety officials are cautioning travelers that an early-fall storm with heavy snow and strong winds could make travel difficult in the Black Hills and much of western South Dakota from early Friday morning through much of the day Saturday. National Weather Service forecasts indicate 30 inches or more of snow could fall in the Black Hills, with six to 12 inches or more across a large area of the western plains. With winds forecast at 20-35 mph and possible gusts to 50 mph or higher, visibility could be reduced and travel impacted in the storm area. The NWS says blizzard conditions are likely Friday in an area along the eastern slopes of the Black Hills. Officials are encouraging motorists to visit www.safetravelusa.com/sd or call 511 to check the latest road conditions and travel advisories before venturing out while this storm moves through the state. If you are traveling in the area of the storm, officials recommend that you always wear your seatbelt, adjust speed and driving to road conditions, allow additional time for trips and carry a winter kit and charged cell phone. If you should become stranded, remain in your vehicle until help arrives.
