PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Four new signs placed along the Lewis and Clark Trail will be dedicated today in Pierre. The signage placement was delayed by the flood waters of 2011. Pierre’s Director of Parks and Recreation Tom Farnsworth says a short ceremony will be held this afternoon at one of the sign locations in Griffin Park. Pierre was one of the locations in 2010 that received signs and markers from the Healthy South Dakota initiative. Communities applied for and received the signs as part of funding that came to the South Dakota Department of Health through a federal grant. Pierre was given permission to delay installation of the signs until sometime after the flood waters of 2011 had receded. Attending today’s sign dedication will be Mayor Laurie Gill, two officials with the South Dakota Department of Health-Lori Oster and Beth Davis; as well as Mark Fenton-who is a nationally recognized trail consultant. The signs feature information about such topics as explorers Lewis and Clark, safety tips when on a trail and the distance to other trail sites.
